Energy Voice | Wood moves to cut workforce at Fife’s Mossmorran gas plant

A number of workers at a major Fife gas processing plant are facing a bleak Christmas after being placed on notice of redundancy.

A total of 15 workers – thought to be around a tenth of the overall workforce – at Mossmorran are understood to have been informed of the potential for lay-offs on Thursday by Wood, the energy group which holds a service contract over the Shell-operated site.

Unite regional officer for Fife, Bob MacGregor, said the union had been notified of the situation and were working with Aberdeen-based Wood to find alternatives to the proposed job losses.

“We have just been notified of some redundancies on the Shell-side at Mossmorran by Wood, which has a repair and maintenance contract there,” Mr MacGregor said.

A spokesperson  for Wood said: “We have begun communicating with employees this week having reviewed our onshore contractor service in line with activity.  We are working closely with potentially impacted employees and are committed to offering redeployment opportunities.”

“We are talking to them to see if we can avoid redundancies.”

The Mossmorran site has been under significant scrutiny in recent months over flaring, a highly visible process that can light up the night sky.

The issue – which was raised in the Scottish Parliament earlier this month – relates to the Fife Ethylene Plant operated by ExxonMobil at the Mossmorran site.
