Flaring at Mossmorran causes anger in nearby villages

Bosses at the Fife Ethylene plant at Mossmorran say they are trying to improve how they communicate with the local community.

People living in nearby villages have been angry at flaring from the plant, when excess gas is burnt off.


It causes a large flame over the site near Cowdenbeath, which people living nearby say causes sleep deprivation and breathing problems.


Flaring is the result of ‘process upsets’ according to management at the plant, who say that it is a last resort that also impacts on them financially.


But bosses have been criticised for not giving detailed enough information about why they’re flaring, and what’s causing it.


Sonya Bingham, plant manager for Exxonmobil, said that she understands the anger:
